TBN to Air Celebration of Life Special for Late Founder Paul Crouch; No Public Memorial Service

Trinity Broadcasting Network is set to air a TV special to honor the life of its co-founder, Dr. Paul Crouch, who died on Saturday, but there will be no public memorial service, as per his wishes.

"TBN will broadcast a special celebration of Dr. Paul Crouch's life and legacy Sunday, December 8th, at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. (Pacific) and Monday, December 9th, at 2 p.m. (Pacific)," a TBN announced on Monday.

Crouch was 79 when he died on Saturday, following a decade-long battle with degenerative heart disease. He was born in 1934 in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Assemblies of God missionaries, and earned a degree in theology from Central Bible Institute and Seminary in Springfield, Mo., and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla.

He founded TBN, the world's largest Christian-owned cable station, with his wife, Janice Bethany Crouch, whom he met in 1957 and later married. Together, they have two sons: Paul Crouch Jr. and Matthew Crouch.

A number of notable leaders in the Christian community have sent their condolences to TBN and Crouch's family, some of which were shared by TBN.

"Everyone at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association extend our condolences to the family of Paul Crouch, Sr., who, along with his wife, Jan, founded the Trinity Broadcast Network in 1973.... He and the TBN family have been longtime friends and supporters of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse," BGEA said.

"Paul Crouch was a giant amongst men whose trail blazed television ministry for the 21st century. His brilliant faith and business acumen brought Christ to many who wouldn't have been otherwise exposed. His legacy lives on through his family, TBN partners everywhere, and the many people that he gave an opportunity. I am numbered amongst those beneficiaries," said Bishop T.D. Jakes.

In recent years, however, the Crouch family and TBN have been embroiled in a number of lawsuits. Their granddaughter, Brittany Koper, former director of finance and human resources, legally accused the Crouch family and TBN of illegally using tens of millions of dollars from the non-profit to support their luxurious lifestyle that includes jets, estates, and vehicles. Koper's uncle, Joseph McVeigh, also filed a lawsuit against TBN in 2012, saying the broadcaster was maliciously targeting him as part of a "campaign of retaliation."
A representative for TBN was unable to provide The Christian Post with further details about the upcoming TV special at the time of press.

Tributes Pour in for TBN Founder Paul Crouch, Including From Max Lucado, Creflo Dollar

Author Max Lucado and televangelists Creflo Dollar and Benny Hinn are among the thousands who have paid their tributes to Paul Franklin Crouch, co-founder of Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), who is being remembered for his faith and ministry. He died at age 79 on Saturday.

"Praise to God for this man of faith," tweeted Lucado, bestselling author and writer and preacher at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. Crouch "has passed into eternal joy," he said.

"We celebrate Dr. Paul Crouch's good & faithful work on earth. May we all leave such a legacy for the Kingdom," wrote Creflo Dollar, founder and senior pastor of World Changers Church International, on Twitter.

"On this day of his glorious home-going, please reflect upon the tremendous impact of this man's extraordinary life," reads a tweet by Pastor Hinn from Benny Hinn Ministries.
Crouch Sr., co-founder along with his wife, Jan, of the world's largest Christian-owned cable station, had been treated for chronic heart problems for over a decade and had received a pacemaker in 2012, according to TBN. He was hospitalized on Oct. 22 in Dallas, Texas, and returned home to California in early November.

"Today, my grandfather, #PaulCrouchSr went home to be with Jesus in heaven. Thank you for your prayers…" Brandon Crouch tweeted Saturday.

"@brandoncrouch our hearts are with you and the family, our sincerest condolences. Know that we are lifting you up from Austin," resonded Pastor Mark Brown, the founder and senior pastor of Breath of Life Worship Centre in Austin, Texas.

"It's amazing to see all that Dr. Paul Crouch accomplished in 40 years promoting the Gospel," said TBN as it released a video paying tribute to its founder, narrating the story of his ministry and highlighting his contribution in reaching the world for Christ.

Crouch had a "servanthood heart, love & passion to spread the Gospel," posted Lead Pastor Samuel Segundo, Jr. of Family Faith Center in Big Spring, Texas. "Enter in thou good & faithful servant #PaulCrouchSr," the pastor tweeted.

Wendy Treat from Christian Faith Center in Washington called Crouch a "Christian general." "One of our Christian generals is now sitting at our savior's feet. Dr Paul Crouch. Reached millions by faith 4Jesus."

"I believe every Christian in this nation has been positively HIMpacted directly or indirectly at some point by #PaulCrouch," tweeted Phil Munsey, chairman of Champion Network of Pastors.

Seshmi Robertson from JCTV, a Christian youth network and part of TBN, remembered Crouch for leaving behind "a legacy of bold faith."

"Without you, there would be no JCTV. You will forever be in our hearts," JCTV Network tweeted.

Crouch, who was born in 1934 in St. Joseph, Mo., began his career in broadcasting by helping to build a campus radio station while studying at Central Bible Institute and Seminary in in Springfield, Mo., in the 1950s.  Crouch founded TBN in 1974, and today TBN reaches every major continent via 84 satellite channels and over 18,000 television and cable affiliates around the world.

Christians from around the world are also paying tribute to him.

Joseph Prince, the senior pastor of New Creation Church in Singapore, offered "deepest condolences, love and prayers" to the Crouch family.

"Praying for the Crouch family from Kenya for the loss of #PaulCrouchSr. He's now receiving his crown! Good & Faithful servant of God," tweeted a woman from Kenya.

However, TBN's journey has not been easy. The question of succession at TBN has made headlines recently. In September 2011, Crouch allegedly wrote a letter saying he wanted his son Matthew Crouch to take over as president of TBN. Paul Crouch Jr., who was presumed the heir of TBN, suddenly announced the following month that he would leave TBN to pursue other ministry opportunities.

And in recent years, the Crouchs and TBN have been embroiled in family lawsuits. Their granddaughter Brittany Koper, former director of finance and human resources, has legally accused the Crouch family and TBN of illegally using tens of millions of dollars from the non-profit to support their luxurious lifestyle, including jets, estates, and vehicles.  Koper's uncle, Joseph McVeigh, who never worked for TBN, also joined the family feud and filed another lawsuit against TBN in 2012, saying TBN was maliciously targeting him as part of a "campaign of retaliation" against Koper.

Paul Franklin Crouch, co-founder of Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), is dead at age 79, reported his grandson Brandon Crouch on Saturday.

"Today, my grandfather, #PaulCrouchSr went home to be with Jesus in heaven. Thank you for your prayers…" Brandon Crouch tweeted.

TBN's official Facebook page later released the announcement about Crouch's death: "Dr Paul F Crouch passed into the presence of the Lord on November 30, 2013. We are grateful for the life of this amazing servant of God. Please pray for the Crouch family during this time. #paulcrouch #tbn"

Crouch was born March 30, 1934 in St. Joseph, Mo., and is the son of Assemblies of God missionaries. His father died when he was seven-years-old, and he was raised by his mother and grandparents. He has a degree in theology from Central Bible Institute and Seminary in Springfield, Mo., and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., among other honorary doctorates.
He met his wife, Janice Bethany Crouch, in 1957 and they married in Missouri. They have two sons: Paul Crouch Jr. and Matthew Crouch.

Crouch Sr., co-founder along with his wife, Jan, of the world's largest Christian-owned cable station, had been treated for chronic heart problems for over a decade and had received a pacemaker in 2012, TBN revealed earlier this year.

Crouch was hospitalized on Oct. 22 in Dallas, Texas, and returned home to California in early November. On Nov. 5, TBN released a statement by TBN attorney and spokesman Colby May that said doctors had taken Crouch off the ventilator and he was breathing on his own.

Two years earlier in September 2011, Crouch was also hospitalized for congestive heart failure. It was during this time that Crouch allegedly wrote a letter identifying that he wanted his son Matthew Crouch to take over the position of president of TBN. Then Paul Crouch Jr., who was presumed the heir of TBN, suddenly announced in October 2011 that he would leave TBN to pursue other ministry opportunities.
In recent years, the Crouch and TBN have been embroiled in family lawsuits, with their granddaughter Brittany Koper, former director of finance and human resources, filing a lawsuit saying that the family was distributing more than $50 million for luxury goods, such as jets, estates, and vehicles, to company directors. When Koper refused to keep quiet about the illegal money use, she was fired and allegedly threatened with physical and lethal violence. Her uncle, Joseph McVeigh, who never worked for TBN, filed another lawsuit against TBN at the Orange County Superior Court in early 2012, saying that TBN was maliciously targeting him as part of a "campaign of retaliation" against Koper.

With TBN officially announcing Crouch Sr.'s death on its Facebook page, within less than 20 minutes of the posting there were more than 450 comments, pledging to pray for the Crouch family and offering condolences.

"My prayers are with Jan and everyone in the family. So sad b/c I thought he was doing better. Now he is doing MUCH better. He opened his eyes to see Jesus! WOW!" posted someone identified as Kathy Boulter.

While someone identified as Apostle Doreen Thornton wrote, "Dr. Paul Crouch is loved and will be missed, he was an amazing obedient servant that gave God all that he had, and I am sure great is his reward. God bless the Crouch family you are in my prayers."
And a Jefferson Elicerio Viloria posted, "I really admired this guy..he had his critics, though, although not perfect, and who is, i regard him as a true man of God. I will miss him because i always enjoyed his enthusiasm on TV....God bless the Crouch family."
